Boerboel Breed Care Guide

Comprehensive guide from our family farm in Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico

1. Exercise & Daily Activity

  • Adult Boerboels need 1.5 to 2 hours of structured exercise daily
  • Long walks, secure yard play, hiking, and swimming are ideal
  • Puppies under 12 months: Short, controlled play only — avoid jumping, running on hard surfaces, or excessive stairs
  • Mental stimulation (training, puzzle toys, scent work) is essential

2. Feeding & Nutrition

  • High-quality large/giant breed puppy or adult food
  • Puppies 8–12 weeks: 3–4 meals per day
  • After 6 months: Reduce to 2 meals per day
  • Use elevated or slow-feeder bowls to help prevent bloat
  • Keep them lean — excess weight stresses joints

3. Grooming & Maintenance

  • Brush short coat 1–2 times per week
  • Bathe every 6–8 weeks or when needed
  • Trim nails monthly
  • Clean ears weekly and wipe face daily (they can drool)
  • Brush teeth 2–3 times per week

4. Puppy Training Tips

  • Start basic training the day you bring your puppy home
  • Use short 5–10 minute sessions multiple times a day
  • Focus on: Sit, Stay, Come, Leave It, and Place
  • Socialize heavily between 8–16 weeks with people, sounds, and environments
  • Teach leash manners early — Boerboels become very strong
  • Be consistent, calm, and confident
  • Use positive reinforcement (treats & praise)
  • Enroll in puppy classes for socialization and obedience
